A Fountain Valley staple! Congratulations on 23 years of business. They had an anniversary sale this weekend for 50% off ramen, only $6.25 a bowl.
Service was speedy! There was a table to check people in at the door with order forms, orders taken quickly and food was ready. We arrived early at 10:30am, and they let us in before opening time. No wait at all, even faster than normal days.
Ramen can be customized: firmness of noodle, intensity of soup base, amount of oil, and additional add on toppings. Bowl comes with 2 slices of chashu pork, noodles, sesame, ginger and green onion.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 151697306Apr 3, 2024
I tried the other side of the restaurant recently and wanted to try the ramen side. I have been to the Gardena location before, years ago.
The place was packed, so I asked the host if I should just write my name on the list. He said, "yes". I'm standing outside in the cold, so I don't crowd the people dining inside(small space). A lady opened the door for guests who were leaving, and she noticed me. I walk in, and the entire counter is empty, set up, and 5-6 tables were open and set up.
It would have been nice to have been seated sooner, not standing in the cold, while there are several tables that opened up.
My server didn't once ask how everything was, after my food arrived. She isn't friendly and is an order taker, not a customer service oriented person.
Food is good, which is what does all of the heavy lifting. Service can be lacking and they will still stay busy. That's why it is this way.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jaccee C.Alhambra, CA28480150Mar 20, 2024
Came here when they had their anniversary deal for the 50% off Hakata ramen.
I've had Shin sen gumi before at a different location many years ago and it was nothing too special to me. It still feels the same way.
The service is decent and the restaurant is really tiny.
I got the normal noodles with the strong soup base and no ginger. What I got was a ramen with no ginger, no green onion and no sesame. The soup base looked exactly the same as the bowl we got with normal soup base so I don't know what the difference is?
The soup and noodles are decent but honestly nothing to rave about. The chasiu was terrible. It was tough to chew and not melt in your mouth quality.
The only good thing is their extra noodle portion as it is really big and enough to be split amongst two people.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Mar 16, 2024Updated review5 check-ins
I was disappointed the flavored eggs in the ramen was salty w no other flavor. I like their yakitori (4 stars) but unfortunately my husband doesn't like it so we took out the Hakata ramen, the broth was salty n also the flavor not to my taste, I'm pretty much done w ramen but I'm also tired of Pho Bo too! I just got off the Celebrity Constellation I wanted to review it but it's not in the Yelp data base, they had an amazing ramen w a lobster tail n only $17!! Lobster broth!
The chicken was not bad but the sauce caused it to lose the crunchiness. If I go back I'll be sure to ask for the sauce to put on the side.Helpful 8Thanks 0Love this 5Oh no 0Dec 9, 2019Previous reviewI just got back from dining at Shen Su Gumi, I am so furious I have to turn on my desktop n leave a long review.
We made a reservation (wait list) via YELP and arrived on time. We got inside and saw an empty table, we were going to sit down when the waiter said NOT SO FAST, I must wait outside, I said why? The table was available, he said it was for 4 so I must wait outside, my husband said it was cold and windy, we'd like to wait inside. The Japanese server signaled that it would be ok but the Hispanic guy said no and literally threw us out, my husband was shocked, I was surprised he didn't answer the rude behavior w a few choice words and just walked out, it was late so I said nothing and we waited outside.
We should have left, it was very windy and every few minutes someone opened the door, I was freezing even w a winter coat.
The food came out lukewarm and w the cold weather, the food got cold fast.
Hakata ramen, $9.50 came w almost nothing.
I had to order the topping, fried charsiu, they brought the lame one that I didn't order and the friend char siu.
Soft flavored egg was cold right out of the frig, it had no taste.
The broth was oily, not much taste, I asked for Sriracha, the didn't have it.
Fried oysters tasted fishy, not delicious w special spices the way I had in Chinese restaurants.
We ordered the fried noodle, only 1 piece of unspecified meat, too tough, I spat it out, noodle was cold, I don't get it, the young kids are crazy or what? It used to be more than 1 hour wait, the past 3 months 2 ,3 Ramen houses opened and sucked the customers out of here then there is a SHABU Japanese AYCE right across from here, I wanted to go there but my husband didn't want to overeat, it would have been better for the same price!!. With tax and tips, it came to $50, a total waste of money. If there is a manager and he or she reads this, pl retrain the Hispanic server, he was disrespectful, who did he think he was to talk to us like that, this is Orange County, not NYC, not Seattle, not Timbuktu, there are 2 to 4 restaurants in every block, competition is fierce, I WILL NEVER GO BACK THERE AGAIN. - May 7, 20241 check-in
We came here for the yakitori after the beach. When you're famished after a day at the beach, this place delivered to our yakitori crave! So delicious and so much more to the menu but not so overwhelming menu to choose from. Everything we ordered was fresh and so flavorful! Small space but packs the punch on their yakitori taste. Service was fast and not so much of a wait on a Sunday night. Friendly smile and fast service is a plus anytime. We just found another go to Yakitori now! Not a place for big group but sitting on their bar would be perfect for couples only as you watch them skewer your fave yakitoris.

The ramen was amazing-the flavor of the broth was was amazing. I ordered the noodles hard and they were perfect texture for me. Even though the flavor was great, the broth was slightly too salty for me. (But my friends loved their broth) They also have very fast service.
I also ordered the spicy tuna on crispy rice and that was delicious. Loved the tuna on top and the crispiness of the rice. Their prices are very reasonable for the amount of food they give.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 7116105Mar 10, 2024
Came to this place due to ramen craving and it did not disappoint, nor did it awe me.
The best part of the hakata ramen for me was the pork and shrimp dumpling and the soft boiled egg! They were so tender and juicy I can just have a plate of those two without the ramen.
The meat was over cooked and not tender, but the noodles were perfectly chewy. The soup base wasn't a strong as I would like the flavor to be, but it wasn't as oily as other places so maybe those two go hand in hand?Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Charles M.Irvine, CA0104Apr 24, 20241 check-in
This place is really good for lunch special. I got the pork noodle and the curry. Amazing experience here. Usually, they are packed but luckily I had some time to come here for lunch and it didn't disappoint.

Great Ramen spot in Fountain Valley! This restaurant has multiple locations but this is a great spot! My boyfriend loves ramen but it's not usually my first choice so I love how I can always find something different to try! The ramen is very flavorful. The takoyaki and tofu were also very good! The tofu had a great Smokey flavor. The ramen had a citrus taste which was very intriguing! The service was very fast and friendly like always. This spot is small but it feels homey and comfortable.

This establishment might have been designed for the younger generation because of the design of the restaurant: People ate at a bar-type table. The food was such that we may not ever go there again.
