I've lived in the neighborhood for many years. You have always been my #1 place for pizza. But, my recent experience has changed my mind.
I ordered on my phone. For some reason, I assumed the "Slice" method of ordering was my only choice. (I see now that it is not.) A few things that I questioned: 1) the receipt on my pizza box said the price was $11.50 but the menu price says $12.50. 2) the receipt on my fries said the price was $4.00 but he menu price says $4.75. 3) I was charged $3.45 for a "Support Local Fee". I don't know what this is and, apparently, I didn't have a choice about paying it. 4) Why was I given a 5% discount? 5) To my great surprise, the pizza (Capricciosa) was mediocre. In the past your pizza has always been superior.
Maybe most of this is because I was using an outside "service" and was unaware of it. But, the whole thing is confusing/misleading to me. It used to be much easier to buy a pizza.
If I decide to give you another chance, I will definitely order my pizza in person. Hope you will try to do better. ThanksHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jonelle G.New York, NY1411229Feb 24, 2024
Served was great. They said 60- 80 mins, arrived in 20. With that said the Gluten free pizza was under cooked and had too much sauce. It tasted like Schar premade Gluten Free crust.
Potato pizza was fine.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Clyde M.Queens, Queens, NY022Jan 30, 2024Updated review
I like this place and it is my go to for pizza simply because in the pizza desert that is Philly, it beats every place else in terms of both quality and price. I mean this honestly and the pizza is really quite good most of the time. The problem, though, and the reason for three stars is twofold:
1.) They tend to be quite stingy with their toppings. I don't expect my pizza to have mounds of toppings, but if I order mushrooms, for example, I do expect there to be more than one or two mushrooms per slice.
2.) They always, and by always I mean ALWAYS forget something. If I order pepperoni, mushroom and olives I'll get two out of the three. If I order mushroom and onion, I'll get onion only. This happens nearly every time in addition to being stingy with the toppings. I've called a couple of times to make them aware of their errors but it seems to fall on deaf ears.
So I'm a at a bit of a crossroads here. I can no longer feel good about ordering pizza from this place but at the same time, it really is one of the few places near me that has good pizza. Maybe they know this so they cut corners? My only other alternatives are double price and not nearly as good (I'm looking at you Mara's and Pizza Plus, among others) or to make my own, which I do but it isn't really practical on the spur of the moment.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Apr 8, 2022Previous reviewAlrighty, I moved to South Philly five months ago and, being Italian American myself, was initially excited to be living in a neighborhood with a large Italian American population. What I have found, however, are a lot of overpriced, and quite frankly bad, old school Italian restaurants run by people who never cared to learn how to actually cook (the delis, however, are houses filled with sandwich geniuses). Terrible Italian restaurants I can tolerate since I can make most everything at home, but Philly's reputation for terrible pizza (in spite of a large Italian population!) has been really getting me down. Enter Pizzeria Pesto.
Admittedly, I initially avoided this place for a wide variety of superficial reasons, and that turned out to be pure stupidity on my part. The fact is that Pizzeria Pesto probably makes the best pizza south of Fishtown and I should have tried them much sooner. The crust is thin and airy, with a near perfect consistency. It is much more than a repurposed bread dough. More importantly, the sauce seems to be simply high quality tomatoes with olive oil, and not the over cooked, flavorless "gravy" that one can find at virtually every other pizza joint in the area. This gives their pizzas a light and fresh flavor, with the tomatoes at the center of the flavor profile no matter what other toppings are on the pizza. My orders have included a plain cheese, pepperoni, pepperoni and mushroom, mushrooms, spinach, and spinach and mushroom. In each case, the flavor of the tomatoes were allowed to shine because, I imagine, they are simply high quality tomatoes that are allowed to cook in the oven with the pizza. Further, the mozzarella while low moisture, also seems to be of an excellent quality. This is all that is necessary for an excellent pizza.
The pasta dishes, leave a bit to be desired (this is the reason for four strs), but certainly not because of the sauce. The pasta that they use doesn't match the quality of the other ingredients, or is possibly cooked, frozen, and stored until ready to be used. This is a shame, because the grainy, rubbery texture of the pasta really detracts from the attention that they pay to the other ingredients. This problem would be easily solved by cooking high quality pasta to order.
To sum up, Pizzeria Pesto makes an excellent pizza by any standard, and the prices are quite reasonable. Their pasta dishes leave a bit to be desired, but the quality and care that they take with the other ingredients almost makes up for the short cuts that they seem to take with the pasta itself. That being said, the pasta dishes are worth a try if you are not in the mood for their excellent pizza. - Merribeth P.Philadelphia, PA14501Feb 2, 2024
Pizzeria Pesto....how I love you. You had me a white pizza with ricotta. You are my go to on a Friday. I brought a pie up to my 97 year old Italian Aunt a state away and she also couldn't stop raving about it even though it was hours old and reheated. The crust is cris, and there is the right balance of toppings. Cooked just right. You make my heart sing, and my tummy full.

Got an order of 2 meatballs and a large half cheese/half pepp pizza.
From the first bite, the meatballs were amazing. Needed to be warmed up, but the flavor was so great I didn't even mind. the pizza crust was a great texture and thickness, with a good ratio of cheese and toppings. I could not stop eating the slices! Had to give some to a friend to save myself some calories. If I didn't have so many more pizza places to try in the neighborhood, I would definitely be eating Pesto every time I wanted Italian. Can't wait to try more toppings and appetizers as soon as I can though!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - George K.Philadelphia, PA1243Feb 14, 2023
I just came here to say the bread & rolls That they bake here to me are even better than the great ones like sarcones or other area bakeries! Just the texture the lightness i could go in about other delish things off menu.. but bread & i are best of friends lol .. my parma sandwich was so fresh so tasty as was the Stromboli! But im type person takes half my entree home because getting hung up on bread & butter or spiced olive oil!!! oh & please..the restaurant next door just is amazing!

My wife has a lot of food allergies so there aren't many places we can order food from that are safe for her. We found pizzeria pesto and cannot say enough good things about them. Their sicilian pizza is one of the best pies we've ever had. They make their own rolls, which are available for purchase. They are baked without any sesame seeds which allow my wife to enjoy bread, if she so chooses. Last night I ordered the penne with chicken and broccoli Alfredo, it was absolutely phenomenal. I also have to comment on their sausage roll, which I recently tried. Picture an open ended stromboli stuffed with sausage, peppers, onion, red gravy, and mozzarella cheese. It is really a treat. The staff has always been very accommodating. Claudio and his crew make it very easy for us to have a delicious and safe dinner when we want to order out. Thank you for a wonderful meal and a great experience.

Pizzeria Pesto is not to be confused with Pesto just a few doors down. They're both owned by the same people, both BYO, and both offer uber delicious Italian food. The pizzeria is obviously more casual, easier to get a table, has delivery and pick up options via Eat 24 on Yelp, and is perhaps a better option when you have the littles in tow.
It's on the smaller side but they do have a balcony for more crowded nights. You start your meal with complimentary garlic knots for each member of your party and pesto potato salad. Their house Pesto is phenomenal! Do not miss a taste! It's not what you're thinking when you hear potato salad. It's just potatoes and Pesto and it's rather yummy!
They have a vast selection of delicious pizzas! Get one to split even if this won't be you're main meal! A small was perfect for two adults. They offer a variety of classic pasta dishes too. They do not have a kid's menu and they do charge for sharing which is usually something I highly dislike. The saving grace here is that they offer any of their pastas in a kid's portion for about $6 so that was a great option for the wee ones. One ordered simple marinara and the other alfredo. They both chose penne although there were many pasta options including gluten free.
Get a cannoli for dessert! You will not be sorry. It's thinner than many others in the South Philly but equally as tasty, even more so than some places.
The service was what I have grown to expect from any South Philly establishment. Thick accents and treated like family. Lots of "Huns" and "dolls" being thrown around. The ladies were great as was some friendly gentleman on the way out asking us to return.
Don't forget your discount for your Yelp check in!
A great, tasty, somewhat inexpensive option!
