So this just happened.......I applied to rent a condo on Bay Area Blvd in the Taylor Crest condo development. The rent was $825 for a 2x1-1/2. The condo has been on the market for 2 months now which is 12 months in dog years. I filled out the application paid for the credit a criminal check. I make about 5 times the amount of rent and currently pay $1500 a month rent for a house. Since the kids are all in college I decided to downsize. So everything was going ok......the agent Joe Sr. was dragging his feet a little bit but I gave everything they needed to approve me. Check stubs from both of my jobs, rental history was A+ for 6 years for perfect renting. Then Joe Sr. tells me THEY want to see 2 months of bank statements.....Who are THEY. Joe Sr. is THEY. So I played along and dropped off the bank statements which showed all of my work direct deposit from both jobs.....my $1500 a month in child support received (which I didn't even include in my income because my income speaks for it's self) and it also showed a balance of almost 10 times the amount of rent in the account. THEY reviewed my bank account and Joe Sr. said he really pushed for me but THEY rejected the application. WTF....So I did some checking myself. THEY never called any of my landlords.....THEY never contacted my employers......THEY DIDN'T DO ANYTHING!!!!! So I had already applied at the Voyager @ The Space Center and was already approved but I was holding out for the cheaper option. So RIDDLE ME THIS????? How am I approved at a NEW up scale complex paying double what they were asking for the condo built in the 70's? It's because SIMIENS PROPERTIES and their AGENTS discriminates. If you are not white don't bother applying to a property owned or managed by this group.

Hi Kellie P. I am sorry you were unable to rent the unit in question for factors the landlord decided, not Simien Properties. The landlord gets a copy of the application and they then have the right to call your previous landlords, employer, etc. So "THEY" is actually the landlord, not Joe Haas, Sr. or Simien Properties. We are not the property manager.

I do think it is unfortunate that you feel Simien Properties discriminated against you because of your race/religion. Why? There are two reasons. 1) I am actually multiracial with plenty of African American blood running through my veins. 2) The owner of that unit was Muslim and I believe on another Yelp post of yours you indicated that you were discriminated against because you were Muslim. So I am certain you being declined for the unit had nothing to do with either being brown skin or Muslim. I am sorry it didn't work out for you but I assure you neither of those two were a factor.
