I am absolutely thrilled to share my incredible experience with Dr. R. Trent McKay at Olympia Orthopedic Associates. It's hard to put into words just how remarkable he and his team are, but I'll do my best to convey my gratitude and admiration.
I've battled bilateral shoulder pain for two decades, compounded by numerous work-related MVAs. In 2021, I had the privilege of meeting Dr. McKay and his outstanding PA, Brad Henderson. Their thorough evaluation and expertise led to the decision that surgery was the next step in my journey to recovery. Given my complex medical history as a 100% disabled veteran, medically retired senior military and federal law enforcement officer, my case was far from simple.
Since 2010, I've endured relentless chronic pain from various musculoskeletal injuries, neurological diseases, and work-related accidents. Yearly physical therapy and pilates routines allowed me to keep working, but the pain was constant. However, a devastating rear-end collision in 2021 escalated my agony to new heights. Sleep became elusive as excruciating shoulder pain, pain throughout my entire spine, and pain radiated through my extremities.
At this juncture, I had initially planned to seek treatment at UCSF, but fate led me to Dr. McKay and PA Henderson. From the outset, their professionalism and talent were abundantly clear. A series of imaging and MRIs confirmed the need for surgery on both shoulders. The toll of my injuries was such that I was medically retired and granted SSDI at just 45, a testament to the severity of my musculoskeletal challenges.
Under the skilled hands of Dr. McKay and the expertise of PA Henderson, I underwent two intricate surgeries that have transformed my life. The first, on June 20, 2022, focused on my right shoulder. Dr. McKay's surgical prowess was on full display as he repaired my arthroscopic rotator cuff, alleviated pressure on the tendons through subacromial decompression, and performed a crucial distal clavicle resection to address acromioclavicular joint arthrosis. The biceps tenodesis he executed was instrumental in treating impingement syndrome, showcasing his meticulous approach.
My journey to recovery continued with a second surgery on November 22, 2022, this time addressing my left shoulder. Once again, Dr. McKay and his team embarked on a complex procedure, encompassing rotator cuff repair, subacromial decompression, another distal clavicle resection, and vital labrum repair. Their unwavering commitment to my healing journey was further underscored by the biceps tenodesis aimed at treating impingement syndrome.
Throughout this arduous process, I completed over 77 physical therapy sessions, both before and after the surgeries. The outcome, to put it simply, has been an astounding success, and I owe it all to the exceptional professionalism and skill of Dr. McKay and PA Henderson. Without hesitation, I wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone grappling with shoulder pain or in need of shoulder surgery.
In Dr. McKay, I found not only a brilliant orthopedic shoulder surgeon but also a beacon of hope. His expertise, combined with the compassionate care he and his team provide, has granted me a new lease on life--one marked by significantly reduced pain and restored mobility. My heartfelt gratitude knows no bounds, and I wholeheartedly award them my highest recommendation.
I must also commend the pain management duo that has played a pivotal role in enhancing my quality of life. Dr. Taylor and PA Scott Adams have been my partners in combating pain, offering monthly trigger point injections and strategically timed epidurals every 120 days. Their expertise has provided me with much-needed relief and empowered me to face each day with renewed strength. Dr. Lamour has been amazing as well with significant foot issues.
And now, as I await cervical spine surgery under the care of Dr. Manista, I find myself once again enveloped by a sense of assurance. The continuity of care and the seamless collaboration among the professionals at OOA are truly remarkable.
I only wish that the legal team would permit their doctors to complete the worker's compensation and disability forms. Fortunately, I have doctors at UCSF who are prepared to fill out the necessary forms and draft the medical letters required for my federal retirement and disability benefits.
With profound thanks,
Michael K.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Brendan B.Olympia, WA15301Apr 8, 2024
Rejected original referral from VA due to wrong knee on paperwork. Annoying, but ok. VA corrects paperwork and new referral sent. Appointment set. A week before the appointment I get a call saying they won't take me on as a patient as they don't take referrals. Not veteran friendly establishment. Take your business elsewhere.

I think the patient care is good here as long as you place as much value on your time as they do (which is NONE). I have filled out the exact same paperwork, repeating the exact same information about my injury at least six times in as many months. All of my care has been with this clinic, so I'm repeating info they already have on file, over and over and over again. But under threat of being denied care and rescheduled I HAVE to do this prior to every follow up appointment!
This has steadily grown from mildly annoying, to insulting, to infuriating! This is clearly a broken system that nobody cares enough to fix.Helpful 2Thanks 1Love this 1Oh no 0 - King L.Minot, ND0423Jul 21, 2023
first experiences are everything & my first experience, my appointment was cancelled not even 25mins before my appointment. They called me as I was already en route being early 20-25mins before my appointment, didn't leave me a voicemail or anything, I called back no answer, they said "their phone was being funny" then was called back again & was asked to come in to be told my very much needed & important appointment was cancelled. No other Dr or accommodation was offered to see me & get me in same day. just cancelled. funny how they charge you a fee IF YOU as the patient need to cancel but they cancel 20-25 mins right before your appointment with no issue, yet want to ask if you want to reschedule.. No thanks. I was referred here too. Shame.

Was referred here by my Chiropractor. I was in a rear ending vehicle accident, not my fault, that injured my lower neck. Causing stiffness in my neck, right shoulder, back of my arm and numbness in 2 fingers.
My initial doctor ordered a MRI and said I needed a plate between c5, c6 and c7. 2 months later, I received a letter saying he's no longer at this facility and I need to call in to reschedule with a different doctor. Called number, was argued with that he still worked there, placed on hold, "Oh, yah, I guess he doesn't work here anymore ".
Made appointment with another one. After another 3 months of a failed epidural steroid shot in the neck and physical therapy, he determined that yes, I needed a operation to put a plate between c6 and c7. I questioned what happened to c5. "Oh, this should cover it and you will be fine".
1 year after, my neck is still stiff, right shoulder, back of my arm, and numbness in 2 fingers. Though a little better, not as much as I expected. His answer was" Well. I figured 1 was enough" . Am I supposed to make another appointment to get another one for c5-c6?
The biggest issue is with billing. When I first checked in, they would not allow me to make an appointment without having my full medical coverage information. This was on my vehicles PIP insurance, but I had to give them my personal medical insurance information. Even though at every appointment made and every check in I said this is on my PIP, billing billed my personal insurance. I had to make several calls after every appointment to try to clear this up. Over a year later, it's still being straightened up by my lawyer.
The overall kicker, is the Doctor refuses to sign a statement that my injuries were caused by the vehicle accident. I have no history of neck, back, arm or finger injuries or numbness prior to this. If he did, my PIP would cover 95% of everything.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Naomi H.Soldotna, AK534211Dec 22, 2021
I just drove an hour to get to this appointment that I made weeks ago. I've been in pain for that long. And because in my online answers I said that a work-related incident recently made my pain worse, they turned me away at the door. They refused to adjust my paperwork and bill my insurance. Now I'm in pain and have nothing. This is the worst medical reception treatment I have ever received. Go somewhere else if you're looking for professional treatment and compassion.

I had a very bad experience with Dr. Trent McKay at the Lilly Road clinic about 9 years ago and just had another bad experience with the Lilly Road clinic and Dr. Agtarap. Because I'm paying out of pocket I decided to drive four hours to Eugene and get treated by my previous knee doc instead of going back to Olympia Ortho. In short, the front desk staff are nasty, the nurse this time was incredibly rude, the doctors I've seen are dismissive and condescending, and there is an overall attitude of non-helpfulness. If you can, go to Seattle or Portland. I wouldn't let these people touch me after how I was treated.

East side clinic only:
The front desk staff has been rude every time I come to my appointment. Today alone I've seen them be rude to two other people as I wait. These people are obviously upset at the "lack" of service they are receiving.
The doctors are great so I'm torn with how I feel about this clinic. Honestly they just need to remove the front staff and start over with new hires. Side note, I adore the West side clinic and give both the doctors and the staff there 5 starsHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Edmund C.Lacey, WA07Jun 22, 2021
Scheduled with Olympia Orthopedic on June 22, 2021, for 11:00 am. I arrived 10 minutes early and checked in and sat down in the waiting area. At 11:28, I asked if they were running late and was told my accrual appointment was scheduled for 11:30. The receptionist stated the scheduler makes the appointments 30 minutes early to complete paperwork (which was not done, because was a former patient). WHO NEEDS 30 MINUTES TO FILL OUT A COUPLE PIECES OF PAPER????? No apology just excuses! At noon, I got up and left. I was upset to say the least.
If you want to deal with rude unprofessional people..... By all means make an appointment at Olympia Orthopedic Associates on Lilly Road.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Nov 1, 2018
I was referred here by my primary doc for a sore knee. Coincidentally, the same knee was "scoped" in 1995 for a small tear in the meniscus. It looks like time for a tune up!
An appointment was scheduled promptly after referral. I had to change my appointment a couple times due to other sickness and that was no problem. The wait time when I got to the clinic was short. The reception staff was polite and thorough.
Again, coincidentally, the doc seeing me was the same one who tuned up the knee in '95! Some twists, flexes, tugs and x-rays came to the conclusion that there may indeed be some new or recurring damage to the knee. A MRI will confirm or not.
All in all, easy peasy!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information
