Cap's is widely recognized for its incredible location and views. In fact, Cap's has been voted "Best Outdoor Dining" on numerous occasions. After watching just one sunset on our deck beneath the trees you will understand why so many customers claim it is The place for outdoor dining. We have a number of waterfront tables available on our main dining deck and under the front garden canopy. Bordering the deck is a beach, which offers a great natural play area and is popular with children of all ages. In fact, for generations our old cedar tree on the beach has been providing entertainment for youngsters. We love this tradition but ask that you keep an eye on your children and make them aware of the sharp shells on the beach. Our Oyster Bar provides an even more relaxed feeling and setting with its large number of seats, each providing an opportunity to enjoy great raw, steamed or baked oysters as well as other shellfish while taking in the view and lively conversation. Do we need a reservation before coming in? You see, I'm planning to go after proposing and just want to make sure everything goes smoothly. Thank you so much!

I just called (12/19/20 @ 3:34pm) and they do not take reservations, they're taking walk ups. Some days/nights menu may be limited for certain things but for the most part, full menu. Didn't get into the specifics of the menu.

Love this place mostly because of its vibe, design, and river view. But the menu is delicious, have a fresh catch.
I was surprised it was opened in 1947, and that restaurant has about 500 types of wine selection.
Our company had st augustine oysters and gator tails as appetizers, then we ordered salmon, tuna, and flounder. The last one was a bit dry. Cream brulle and rum cake were great addition to our diner.
Complimentary valet parking. Or dock for boats.
Service great. Waited for a riverfront table about 10 mins.Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 1Oh no 0 - Samuel R.Chicago, IL11227May 4, 2024
Caps on the Water: A Seafood Gem
Rating: 100/10
My recent dining experience at Caps on the Water was beyond exceptional. The freshness and flavor of the fish were unparalleled, leaving me eager to return for more. In fact, I couldn't resist visiting twice during my two-day stay, and each meal surpassed the last.
As someone very picky with fish, I was pleasantly surprised by the Salmon I ordered and almost wanted seconds! My wife's Cod was equally delightful. The fish, along with the fries and appetizers, were toe-curling in their deliciousness.
The staff at Caps on the Water are a true asset, embodying kindness and a genuine eagerness to ensure a delightful dining experience. Their recommendations on fish preparation were spot-on, showcasing their expertise and commitment to customer satisfaction.
I must commend the complementary valet service, which added to the overall convenience and comfort of my visit. The valets were not only courteous but also appreciative of tips, reflecting a culture of gratitude that permeates the entire establishment.
A special shoutout to Branden, my waiter, whose exceptional service and kindness enhanced my dining experience. His attentiveness and helpfulness were truly remarkable.
The view was absolutely amazing. We were able to get a table on the waterfront which was super relaxing as well as really added to the ambience. I loved being able to sit outside underneath the trees and listen to the water as we ate. It just added
Overall, Caps on the Water exceeded my expectations in every way. From the delectable seafood to the friendly staff, this restaurant deserves a rating of 100/10. I can't wait to return!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Apr 9, 2024
My boyfriend and I stopped by on Saturday night - naturally the place was packed! The way they organized the parking (complimentary valet) was impressive! They had a guy directing traffic, a girl with an iPad taking down your name and party size, and then when you checked in with the hostess, they were able to tell you the wait time.
This is a large restaurant with indoor seating, outdoor seating, a bar and a beautiful dock. What is super cool is - you can just go to the dock and order drinks/appetizers directly from a server there. We ended up doing that, since the wait for an outdoor table was 90 min, and we did not want to miss the sunset. Wish more places offered this option!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 213672Apr 16, 2024
This place has it all from complementary valet parking to a perfect location on the water! The service is friendly and welcoming. The drink menu has a lot of variety. The seafood is spectacular and deliciously prepared. The venue is perfect and has an inviting ambiance. I can't say enough positive things about this place (only that I wish they would take dinner reservations).
Really enjoyable!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Apr 8, 2024
More than 4, less than 5. 4.5?
My friend and I came to celebrate our birthdays.
Valet is nice and they are quick! I didn't like that the smoking was next to the valet so while we waited I had to smell smoke.
We wanted to sit by the water but it was a much longer wait so we sat inside where the seats were heavily used lol I mean sink in so low you almost can't touch your feet used. Not sure if they were going for that, but it was mildly uncomfortable lol.
Our waitress was adorable I loved her she has great energy.
We started with the sampler platter- 5/5! The salmon was fantastic with the relish- I loved it. The pear ravioli was amazing, glad we didn't have to share it with our dates.
The beet salad is their seasonal salad right now and it is 5/5. I could eat it everyday.
Hubs didn't like the amount of potatoes he got with his steak- he was very disappointed in the portion size (being small) 4/5. He also didn't like the tomato situation.
Everyone overall enjoyed their food. The deserts were pretty good. I got the lava cake which was slightly dry.
This is a solid restaurant with great views but I felt like the price didn't fit. I would come here again for the salad for sure!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 1 - Mar 23, 2024
A fan favorite...caps on the water! I will say, expect a wait if you're coming for prime time dinner. You do have to valet your car which is a little annoying. Of course it is complimentary with a not-so complimentary tip. Anyways, the food is consistently good. It's always very fresh, and is typically pretty quick once you do sit down. Some notable favorites are the fish and chips, truffle fries, shrimp and scallop sauté, blackened fresh catch, and vanilla grouper. Ultimately we do come for the ambiance. Right on the water, indoor/outdoor options, tables are shaded, tropical inspired cocktails. It's a vacation right in our backyard!
TLDR: delicious food, great ambiance, expect to wait a whileHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 2 - Apr 17, 20241 check-in
Recently visited Caps with friends for dinner. They highly recommended the restaurant based on fantastic food, views, and service. Our evening there did not disappoint. When we arrived there was a 30 minute wait (they don't take reservations); however the time flew by as we sat on their expansive partially covered dock overlooking the intercostal with a server at the ready to take our drink orders. We chatted and enjoyed a cocktail while we waited. The next thing we knew, our table was ready, and it was right along the water. We had a great meal of oyster rockefeller, blackened scallops, crusted salmon, and crusted sheepshead along with another round of drinks. Our server was kind and attentive. The valet parking is a nice touch as well. We would definitely come back. Thanks!

Another great meal here! The outdoor table was pleasant and they turned on the gas heaters to make it more comfortable. Service was phenomenal!
Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Oct 17, 2023Previous reviewEating here was a real treat. The food, service, and atmosphere were all top notch. We came here for our date night dinner before catching a show at the Limelight, and were very pleased.
I don't really care for valet parking, but that is the only option here because they get very crowded and the valets are able to make sure all the space is optimized, which I get. I will say these guys were very efficient in both taking the car and returning it quickly.
I understand why they can get very crowded! There is large covered outside deck area overlooking the Tolomato River, and the sunset views are highly coveted to accompany a delicious meal. The river views are beautiful, and there is even a dock where boat driving diners may "park" and have a meal.
The bayou gumbo was a large portion of amazing flavor, accompanied by a wonderful homemade corn muffin. The spice and flavors were perfectly balanced and honestly I could have made a meal from this alone.
We also tried the garlic oysters which were also outstanding.
For mains we had the key lime shrimp and roasted vegetables with blackened grouper. Both were fantastic, full of flavor and very fresh.
The menu is full of wonderful sounding dishes and we can't wait to return to try something else!
Pro tip: They do not accept reservations, so depending on when you arrive and the weather you may have a wait ahead of you! - Jan 9, 2024Updated review5 check-ins
I did not realize it had been years since I updated my review for Caps, so I decided to do that.
My girlfriends and I have put this on a girls night rotation several times per year and have been enjoying our trip down from Jacksonville (about 45 minutes).
The atmosphere is great being waterfront, inside and outside dining options, and a nice menu loaded with fresh seafood dishes.
Our last visit was to enjoy the St. Augustine Nights of Lights and to celebrate Christmas and holiday birthdays.
I always take my own bottle of wine to a restaurant and the corkage fee here is $25. That is a bit steep compared to other places I frequent but it is an option.
We had three entrees as we love the bread and butter, so no appetizers were needed. The entrees were the tuna, the salmon and a blackened grouper. All were delicious.
They do not take reservations, so be prepared to wait. You can get a drink and stroll the dock while you wait though.
Worth checking out if you are in the area.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1Jan 6, 2021Previous reviewWe visited this spot on New Year's Eve and enjoyed it. We had tried several times before but the wait was too long. This evening we arrived around 5:30 and were told an hour, but it was only about 45 minutes.
The space is waterfront and most of the dining is outside, which is nice. They do have indoor options as well but outside is the best way to go. They do have a small dock so you can boat up there as an option.
We shared a Cap's salad to start and it was great. The dressing was so good! That was the best part of our meal. The server, Brandon, also brought us some fresh bread and honey butter. That was a nice touch.
For entrees, we had the Vanilla Grouper and the Seafood Trio. I did not read the description well enough on the fish as it was fried and I thought it was blackened. Totally my mistake. And the server was very nice and offered to have it redone but I was not going to ask that. However, I'm not sure I would have liked this dish either way. The sauce was way too sweet. Thank goodness it was served on the side. But I only ate a small portion as it was not that warm and honestly not great. My husband felt the same about his platter. The food was barely warm and just not great.
The atmosphere is nice however the food leaves a bit to be desired. And it's not inexpensive. I will go back but try some different things.
Full bar, seafood, steaks, nice menu selection. Nice views.
They are a little over the top on the Covid things too checking temperatures and requiring masks anytime you aren't at your table. - Nov 20, 2023
I recently had an incredible dining experience at Cap's, located right on the Tolomato River. The picturesque sunset view added a touch of magic to the evening. The food was exceptional, with a delightful selection including oysters Rockefeller, vanilla grouper, beet goat cheese chicken salad, and beef tips. The service was equally impressive; they promptly addressed a small issue with my dirty martini, showing their commitment to customer satisfaction.
The only minor inconvenience was the valet-only parking, so be sure to have cash for tipping. Also, while the dining experience was undeniably superb, it's important to note that the price point is on the higher side. Our bill ended up being about $100 more than our typical dinner outing.Helpful 2Thanks 1Love this 3Oh no 0
